Origin of the name Killifish.

Killifish are secondary freshwater fishes, i.e., primarily living in freshwater today but originating from marine coastal waters in the remote past.

Their common name, Killi (plural, Killies) stems from an old Dutch name, used by immigrants of USA in the seventeenth century to qualify fishes living in small channels, the "kills", that reminded them their home country..

Progressively, the name has been extended to other groups of related fishes from northern America, Mediterranean countries and finally tropical countries, when aquarists of the twentieth century became passionately interested by these fishes.

New to the Killifish Hobby? Well, there are numerous sources of information available to you on the AKA Website, sign up for Killitalk, as well as, those local affiliate clubs in your own area. The first and the smartest thing to do is to contact someone in your local killifish club and arrange to join them at their next meeting. I tried to get by alone and it isn’t an easy task with these fish. These people have the knowledge, experience and the support that is crucial to your fish surviving and your personal sanity to remain intact. I have now found it much easier just to talk to someone who knows, rather than to spend weeks looking on the net and trying to find information in the local public libraries, of which have little if any information on Killifish in any useable and recent formats, most public information barely scratches the surface of what you need to know about these fish. Check out my links page and visit everything you can to make your final decisions as to what genus, species you want to work with and what kind of setups are required to keep that fish. How much room can you afford to use for your tanks and equipment? How much time are you willing or able to dedicate to keeping Killies? How will your housemates acclimate to your new hobby? What are your water parameters? Do you have access to live foods or are willing to hatch and keep live foods? All these things and more should be considered before you ever bring live fish home and begin the husbandry of these rare and unique fishes. Find a mentor who is willing to commit time to teaching and helping you along the path. If you can’t find someone, I am always available here on Nu Urth Wrx website to help solve any problems with the maintenance and acquiring of these, the most beautiful fish in the world.
